By: Raymond H.C.R. No. 89         HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION          WHEREAS, Lloyd Millard Bentsen, Jr. dedicated his life to   public service representing and protecting the citizens of the   State of Texas; and          WHEREAS, The Honorable Mr. Bentsen was born in Mission,   Texas, and began his lifelong pursuit of public service by earning a   Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America   before attending and graduating from the University of Texas School   of Law in 1942; and          WHEREAS, The Honorable Mr. Bentsen then served his as a pilot   for the Army Air Corps from 1942 through 1945 during which time he   flew thirty five missions over Germany, Romania, and Italy among   theaters so hostile that he was shot down twice, and during this   time of service, he was promoted to a major and in that position was   in control of over 600 Allied troops and the operations of 15 bomber   aircrafts and their crew; and          WHEREAS, after his service to the Country during World War   II, The Honorable Mr. Bentsen served his hometown Rio Grande Valley   area from 1946 to 1955 as a County Judge and as a Member in the House   of Representatives for three terms before he enjoyed a successful   stint in the private sector until 1970 when he returned to public   service; and          WHEREAS, The Honorable Mr. Bentsen then in 1970 was elected   to the United States Congress and proudly served until 1993, when he   retired from the Senate to accept President Clinton's nomination as   the Secretary of the Treasury; and          WHEREAS, the legacy of The Honorable Mr. Bentsen includes   landmark legislation including the guidance and passage of the   Employee Retirement Income Security Act, the creation of Individual   Retirement Accounts, and legislation protecting low income women   and children by providing easier access to health care; and,          WHEREAS, in addition to his legislative legacy, The Honorable   Mr. Bentsen was recognized by the University of Texas Health   Science Center of Houston for his contribution and support to   advance the healthcare provided to stroke victims; now, therefore,   be it          RESOLVED, that the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas   hereby direct the Texas Workforce Commission to rename the Texas   Workforce Commission building to the Lloyd M. Bentsen State Office   Building; and, be it further          RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an official   copy of this resolution to the chair and executive director of the   Texas Workforce Commission.
